American Heart Association (AHA) – Predoctoral Fellowship

Fellowships support research and clinical training of promising students who are matriculated in predoctoral or clinical health professional degree training programs and who intend careers as scientists, physician-scientists, clinician-scientists, or other related careers aimed at improving global cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and brain health. Proposals are encouraged from all academic disciplines (biology, chemistry, mathematics, technology, physics, engineering, data science, etc.) and all health-related professions (physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, physical and occupational therapists, statisticians, nutritionists, etc.). The fellowship offers support for up to two years.

Eligibility:
At the time of application, the applicant must:

• Be a post-baccalaureate, predoctoral M.D., Ph.D., D.O., D.V.M. (or equivalent) student seeking research training with a sponsor/mentor prior to embarking on a research career.
• Be a full-time student working towards their degree.
• Have a sponsor who is an established investigator interested in the conduct and progress of the research project during the research training period.
• U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and some international applicants are eligible. See website for details.
• Be an AHA Professional Partner/Member.

At the time of award activation, the applicant must:

• Have completed initial coursework and be at the stage of their doctoral program where they can devote full-time effort to research or activities related to their development as an independent researcher.
• Awards are limited to non-profit institutions, including medical, osteopathic, and dental schools, veterinary schools, schools of public health, pharmacy schools, nursing schools, universities and colleges, public and voluntary hospitals, and others that can demonstrate the ability to conduct the proposed research.
• Applications will not be accepted for work with funding to be administered through any federal institution or work to be performed by a federal employee, except for applications to the AHA’s Institute for Precision Cardiovascular Medicine, and applications from Veterans Administrations employees.
• Funding is prohibited for awards at non-U.S. institutions.

Award amount:

• $27,144 annual stipend.
• $4,550 annually for health insurance.
• $2,000 annually additional funding for project support and travel.
